But people also say it’s also a beautiful setting for a city, with pristine beaches for swimming and surfing, and mountains for hiking. It’s a laid-back, diverse, multicultural and liberal part of California with great culture, art and food. So we decided to see which side of the fence we’d come down on. And, major spoiler alert: we loved it. We arrived in LA at the end of our Pacific Coast…

Our Mustang-or-Similar in this case was a bright red Chevrolet Camaro. We played with all the buttons until the roof retracted, and with the sun on our heads we headed south out of the city for our first stop on the road trip, the little town of Santa Cruz. I mainly know of Santa Cruz thanks to a song by The Thrills. And they’re right, it isn’t, so we arrived there surprisingly…

We stayed at the fantastic Hotel Boheme, tucked away just on the edge of Chinatown. It was a wonderful, cosy little hotel, hidden up a staircase with a thick pile carpet and run by a receptionist who looked like she’d been there since the 1950s. We collected our brass key, complete with chunky wooden keyring, and checked into our dated room. A wrought iron bed, with a chequered blanket…

We rarely stay in pricey hotels, but decided to treat ourselves to a couple of nights in the Venetian, right in the heart of the Las Vegas strip. I’d conjured up some dubious Gavin Maths where you take the location and free parking and divide it by the convenience and cost of the rooms and it turns out to be the most sensible place to stay. Best not to ask. We arrived on the strip at sunset…

When our plane landed in Phoenix it was a sunny afternoon, and a balmy 30°C. We collected our 2WD rental car and headed north towards the Grand Canyon, with an overnight stop planned at a little town called Flagstaff. As we drove north on I-17, the cacti-strewn desert of Phoenix soon gave way to rocky, scrubby desert, and the temperature dropped. Half an hour later, with the sun starting to set…

We stayed at the excellent Hotel St Peter and Paul, just on the edge of the Marigny District, and a short walk away from the party streets of the French Quarter. As usual, we had a long list of food places to explore. We had beignets at Café du Monde, leaning over the table, our fingers sticky, covering ourselves in a mist of powdered sugar. We headed out in a taxi to Parkway Tavern…

We arrived in New York on a dark January evening and it was cold. Very cold. Too-cold-to-snow cold. We hopped in a cab, pretending it wasn’t cripplingly expensive, and checked into our hotel, the CitizenM on the Lower East Side. A slightly edgy neighbourhood, the Lower East Side is home to all the best dive bars and a whole host of great little restaurants, without being smack bang in the middle…

We managed to hire the only Fiat 500 in North America and, dwarfed by pickup trucks and huge American cars, navigated our way through downtown Toronto towards Niagara.

During the two-hour drive around Lake Ontario, Nicola and I discussed the fact that the Niagara Falls are not even in in the top 500 highest waterfalls in the world. We decided that it’s probably just the waterfall with the best PR team. We parked on the delightfully-tacky Clifton Hill and walked to the falls. Although they’re not the highest, they must be one of the most impressive.
